Types of Metal Ferro Alloys and Their Uses
02/11/2009 - By Admin

"Ferro alloys are any kind of alloy and another metal, especially one of silicon, manganese, tungsten and the like that is used in the production of special kind of steels. Metal Ferro alloys usually have lower melting ranges than those of pure elements and can be easily integrated in the molten steel.

Ferro-alloys are used in the manufacture of alloy steels. Each alloy is generally named after the added metal. Take ferrochromium, ferro niobium, ferro molybdenum, and ferro vanadium as example.

The main ferro alloys and their definitions are the following:

Ferromanganese. This is a type of ferro alloy with a high content of manganese. Made by heating mixture of MnO2 and Fe2O3 oxides with carbon in a furnace. These undergo thorough thermal decomposition reaction and are used as steel deoxidizer.

Ferrochrome. Also known as FeCr, this is a corrosion-resistant alloy type of chrome and iron containing fifty percent to sixty five percent of chrome. It is often used as a finishing material which contains about fifty to seventy percent chromium alloyed with iron. Ferrochrome is utilized in the production of stainless steel.

Ferromolybdenum is composed of molybdenum content for about sixty to seventy percent. It is an important iron molybdenum alloy. This molybdenum is mined and transformed into molybdenum oxide. This oxide is mixed with iron oxide and aluminum before being reduced creating an aluminothermic reaction to molybdenum and iron. The ferromolybdenum can be purified by an electron beam melting or used as it is.

Ferrosilicon contains high proportion of iron silicides. This is a kind of ferro alloy, an alloy of iron and silicon, which contains fifteen to ninety percent silicon. Ferrosilicon is used in making steels and foundries as a source of silicon in the production of carbon steels, stainless steels, and the like for deoxidizing properties to prevent the loss of carbon from the molten steel.

Silicomanganese. Its a ferro alloy with high manganese and silicon content. Made by heating a mixture of oxides namely manganese oxide, silicon dioxide, and iron oxide with carbon in a furnace, silicomanganese undergoes a thermal decomposition reaction. Like others, it is also used as a deoxidizer and an alloying element in steel.

Ferrocerium. A man made metallic material that can give off a large number of hot sparks when rubbed hardly against a rough surface. This is often used in many applications such as clockwork toys, strikers, and commonly in lighters for the initial ignition source for the primary fuel.

Ferrochrome is a corrosion-resistant alloy of chrome and iron containing about fifty to sixty five percent of chrome. It is also known as FeCr. It is used as a finishing material which contains fifty to seventy fifty to seventy percent of chromium alloyed with iron.

These are only a few of the many different types and uses of metal ferro alloys.
